Andi Review: Conversational AI Search Without the Ads
Andi is what search looks like when nobody's selling your attention: type a question like you'd ask a friend, get a direct AI-generated answer with source links, zero ads, zero tracking, zero accounts. It's been quietly doing conversational search since 2023 — before the big players bolted AI onto their ad machines. I tested whether the indie still holds up.
| Verdict | 8/10 — the cleanest AI search experience, period |
|---|---|
| No sign up? | Yes — no accounts, no cookies, no tracking |
| Price | Free, unlimited; revenue comes from a developer API |
| Best for | Ad-free research, private everyday search, students who cite sources |
| Watch out for | Smaller index than Google; occasional thin answers on obscure topics; long-term monetization still evolving |
What is Andi?
Andi (andisearch.com) is a conversational AI search engine that opened to the public in January 2023. Instead of ten blue links, you get a generated summary answering your question directly, backed by citations you can click through. Think Perplexity's core idea, but stripped of every growth-hack: no login prompts, no "download our app" banners, no sponsored results, no personalization bubble.
The positioning is deliberate — "like chatting with a smart friend." Queries work best in full sentences: "Why is the sky blue during the day but red at sunset?" rather than "sky blue red sunset." The engine combines generative AI with live web data, so answers stay current, and every answer carries source links for verification.
The no-signup test
There is no account system on Andi. That's not marketing — I could not find a login page, a signup button, or a settings page that requires identity. I searched, followed up, refined queries, used the Summarize and Explain features, all as a fully anonymous visitor. No cookies set for tracking, no "create an account for unlimited searches."
This is the strongest privacy posture of any AI search tool I've tested: no personal data collection, no search history logging, encrypted requests. For a site whose entire job is answering your questions, the absence of a data-collection machine is the whole review. If you want the private-chatbot equivalent, see our Duck.ai review — different job, same philosophy.
Free limits: what's actually free
Everything on the consumer site is free with no limits I could find — unlimited searches, follow-ups, summarization, and explanation features. The business model lives elsewhere: Andi sells a developer API on a pay-as-you-go basis, and a premium consumer tier has been discussed but the core search remains free.
That monetization is the one thing to watch with clear eyes. A free, ad-free, unlimited service has to pay its inference bills somehow. The API business is the answer today; if a premium tier appears tomorrow, the free search is the product being protected, not the upsell funnel — at least so far. It earned its slot in our 12-agent no-signup test on the strength of staying free and open.
Output quality
I ran Andi through factual questions, how-to queries, and a few genuinely tricky ones. Answers were direct, well-structured, and — critically — cited. The Summarize feature produces accurate condensed versions of articles with citations intact, and the Explain feature simplifies complex topics like a patient tutor. On mainstream topics, accuracy was excellent; independent tests have scored Andi highly on factual accuracy, sometimes ahead of bigger names.
The weak spot is depth on obscure or very recent niche topics, where the smaller index shows. For breaking news or hyper-specific technical questions, cross-check with Google. For everything else — definitions, explanations, comparisons, research starting points — Andi's answer-first format saves real time versus scanning ten tabs.
Best for
- Clean research: answers with citations, no SEO-spam gauntlet
- Private searching: no tracking, no history, no ad profile
- Students: the Explain and Summarize features are study aids
- Everyday questions: faster than Google for "just tell me the answer" queries
Limitations
- Smaller index: Google still wins on obscure and ultra-fresh queries
- No personalization: the privacy that protects you also means no tailored results
- Visual search: the image feed exists but isn't Google Lens
- Business model risk: free-and-unlimited forever depends on API revenue holding up
- Feature breadth: no maps, shopping, or flights — it's a Q&A engine, not a Google replacement
Andi vs the alternatives
Against Google: Google has the index and the ecosystem; Andi has the experience. For "answer my question" queries, Andi is faster and calmer. For "find that specific page," Google.
Against Perplexity: Perplexity has more features and better funding; Andi has no account system and no ads. If you want AI search with zero identity attached, Andi is the pick.
Against Duck.ai: complementary, not competitors. Duck.ai is a private chatbot for conversations; Andi is a private search engine for questions. I use both, for different jobs.
FAQ
Is Andi really free with no sign up?
Yes. There is no account system — I searched extensively with no registration, no email, no cookies for tracking. The consumer search is free and unlimited.
How does Andi make money if there are no ads?
Through a developer API sold on a pay-as-you-go basis. A premium consumer tier has been discussed, but core search remains free.
Is Andi private?
It's the most private AI search I've tested: no personal data collection, no search history logging, no cookies, encrypted requests. Full anonymity by design.
How accurate are Andi's answers?
Strong on mainstream topics, with citations on every answer so you can verify. Independent accuracy tests have scored it highly. Always verify critical facts against sources — standard advice for any AI tool.
What are the Summarize and Explain features?
Summarize produces cited summaries of articles and source material; Explain simplifies complex topics like a tutor. Both are free and account-free.
Andi vs Perplexity — which should I use?
Perplexity for features and depth; Andi for zero-account privacy and a calmer experience. If "no sign up" is your filter, Andi is the answer.
Verdict
Andi is the AI search engine for people who are tired of being the product. Direct answers, real citations, no ads, no tracking, no accounts — it's a combination nobody else offers at this quality level. The smaller index is the honest tradeoff, and it's one I'm happy to make for everyday searching.
8/10. My default for "just answer the question" searches. Google stays bookmarked for the hard stuff; Andi gets the other 90%.
